Secure Sockets Layer, or SSL, is a protocol used to encrypt the data exchanged between a server and its users. The practical application of using an SSL is to secure the info that clients submit on your site - a login page, a payment page if you run an Internet store, etc. Any content they enter in any box on the site shall be submitted securely to the server, so their login or payment information shall be protected from being accessed by unauthorized individuals. Normally, an SSL certificate requires a dedicated IP address to be installed, meaning that the overall cost for your web presence shall be bigger. While this might not exactly be a problem for a larger firm, it might matter for a non-profit organization or a small online shop which does not generate big earnings if additional money should be spent. That is the main reason why we have taken advantage of an extension referred to as Server Name Indication (SNI) and we've made it possible to use a shared server IP address to set up an SSL certificate.
Shared SSL IP in Hosting
A shared IP can be used for any SSL certificate, regardless if you purchase it from us or from some other seller and regardless of the hosting plan
that you have on our end. If you get the SSL through us, you'll find this option on the certificate order page inside your hosting CP where you could also take advantage of the 1-click automatic configuration option that we offer. If the latter is picked within the SSL order wizard, our system shall install and set up everything for you using the specifically configured server shared IP address, so once you order and approve the SSL, there shall not be anything else to do on your end. You can save the cash you'll otherwise have to pay for a dedicated IP address and the SSL will do the job in the exact same way, so any data the site visitors submit will be encrypted. The only difference is that if you enter the shared IP address instead of your domain name
within a browser, the site shall not show up.
Shared SSL IP in Semi-dedicated Servers
The shared IP address option is available with all semi-dedicated plans
and the setup takes just 2 mouse clicks inside the hosting Control Panel no matter if you get an SSL via our company or via a third-party provider. There will not be any difference with regards to how the certificate operates or encodes the information that your visitors submit, so your Internet site shall be secure without having to spend any additional money for a dedicated IP. The one thing which will be different is that https://the-shared-IP will not open your site, unlike https://the-dedicated-IP, but it is unlikely that anybody shall ever try to access your site in this way instead of inputting your domain name. Additionally we offer an auto-configuration option for the SSLs ordered through our company and if you select it and you choose to use a shared IP instead of a dedicated one, our system will set everything up as soon as the SSL is approved and issued with no need for any action on your end.
